A confirmed musician, Jean-Francis Monvoisin obtained his secondary-school teaching diploma (CAPES) in music, then a first prize as a singer and a first chamber music at the Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur de Paris. He owes his first commitment to Manuel Rosenthal for the Poem of\u00a0Love and the Sea<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Ernest Chausson, performed on air at Radio France. His debut on stage were at the Op\u00e9ra de Lyon, notably with a role that marked his career: Hoffmann, under the direction of Kent Nagano (1994).<\/p>\n

He started to perform internationally in 1998, making his debut in Italy under the direction of Richard Bonynge in the Puritans<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0alongside Luciana Sera, with the Scottish National Opera in\u00a0Norma<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Pollione), under the direction of Richard Armstrong, as well as with the Edimburgh Festival for\u00a0Giovanna d’Arco<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Verdi (1999). His American debut were with the Cleveland Opera in\u00a0Romeo and Juliet<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Gounod, in Quebec with the Op\u00e9ra de Montr\u00e9al where he sang Puccini’s\u00a0La Boh\u00e8me<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(2000) and with the\u00a0Opera de Lima<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for Puccini’s\u00a0Tosca<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Carmen<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Bizet (2001), as well as a role at the Opera-Bastille for\u00a0Salamb\u00f2<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by F\u00e9nelon.<\/p>\n

As his voice and singing matured, he started addressing a wider repertoire: The Damnation of Faust<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0at the Opera House in Bremen (directed by Gunther Neuhold),\u00a0Die \u00c4gyptische Helena<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by R. Strauss in Cagliari (2001), he was Canio in\u00a0Paillasse<\/strong>\u00a0by Leoncavallo and Turridu by\u00a0Cavalleria Rusticana<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0at the Hawaii Opera,Radam\u00e9s of\u00a0Aida<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in Lubeck,\u00a0Carmen<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0under the direction of Maestro Carella. He met great success at the Op\u00e9ra de Marseille in\u00a0Bacchus by Ariadne<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0auf Naxos<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(2002), a role he regularly takes up both in France and abroad.<\/p>\n

In 2003, he made his debut on two large stages: the Monnaie de Bruxelles alongside Jos\u00e9 van Dam in Oedipus on the road<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0of Bartholom\u00e9 (world premiere) and the Grand Theater of Geneva where he sang, at short notice, the Faust of the\u00a0Damnation of Faust<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in a staging by Olivier Py.
\nSince then, he has performed on many stages abroad – in Italy (Rome Opera, Lecce, Lucca, Bolzano, Santa Cecilia Academy (under the direction of Antonio Pappano), Belgium and the Netherlands where he has toured with\u00a0Mrs. Butterfly<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Pinkerton), Cape Town, Switzerland, Freiburg and the Verbier Festival and in Germany where in 2008 he sang Meyerbeer’s\u00a0The African Woman\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and Damnation de Faust at the Nuremberg Opera, he was Benvenuto Cellini in\u00a0Benvenuto Cellini<\/em><\/strong>, by Berlioz, in a magnificent production by Laura Scozzi which earned him a great recognition from the public and critical success. He then performed as Don Sebastian in\u00a0Don Sebastian, the King of Portugal<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Donizetti- as well as in France, including the Grand Theater of Limoges, Saint Denis de la Reunion, the Opera of Metz and the Grand Theater of Tours where he was noticed in Ropartz\u2019s\u00a0Le Pays<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(he sang Tual, one of the three roles), which won the Critics Prize 2008.<\/p>\n

He is regularly heard in the roles of Faust<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Don Jos\u00e9<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Hoffmann<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Radam\u00e9s<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Florestan<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Bacchus<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0….<\/p>\n

Recently, he has had great success in The Tales of Hoffmann<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0at the Beijing Opera in a new production by Francesca Zambello and as\u00a0Peter Quint<\/em><\/strong>\/Prologue in\u00a0Turn of the Screw<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Britten at the Op\u00e9ra de Tours in the production of Dominique Pitoiset.<\/p>\n

He also regularly performs at concerts, invited to Montreal by the OSM and Newark by the NJSO in Carmina Burana<\/strong><\/em>, under the direction of Jacques Lacombe, in Quito with the ONSE in Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 under the direction of Nathalie Marin, during tours in Switzerland, in Geneva, Lausanne, Neufch\u00e2tel for\u00a0Verdi’s Requiem<\/em><\/strong>, in Madrid with ORTVE for\u00a0Faust-Symphonie<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Liszt under the direction of Carlo Rizzi.<\/p>\n<\/div>
